Congratulations to our GeoSciences colleague Laura Watts

Her 2019 MIT Press book Energy at the End of the World: An Orkney Islands Saga has been awarded the Rachel Carson Prize by the Society for Social Studies of Science.

The prize recognises scholarly quality and societal or political relevance in recognition of the historical contribution of the author of Silent Spring.

Selected from a long-list of 78 volumes, the awarding committee note that Laura’s book activates and renders accessible for audiences both close to and far from Orkney the possibilities and contradictions of how renewable energy futures are made and imagined in specific places, through multi-species infrastructural webs, with their attendant market logics and knowledge politics.
